Dear TAF,
I'm feeling pretty good today. I had a couple of great moments Wednesday morning when I was in the TAF Academy front office stuffing envelopes with invitations to the Enrollment Open House.

First, I saw about a dozen boxes containing the "official" TAF Academy lab coats for our students. A few kids modeled them when the arrived (Have a look on our website) and I know the rest of their classmates can't wait to start wearing them next week. I have to thank our long-time partner Group Health for donating the lab coats and to our new friends at Branded Solutions by Edgar Martinez for the custom embroidery work.

Also while I was there, a parent came in the office. She was part of a group of parents hosting a pizza party to reward students who helped raise money for the school. This parent home schooled her 7th grade son through much of his academic life. When she heard about TAF Academy, she decided it was time to come back to public school. Now she's one of our parent leaders in the TAF Academy Parent Teacher Organization.

I remember how excited she was about TAF Academy when I met her in September. Today, she's even more thrilled because her son is thriving, he's challenged every day and he has a great group of friends.  She recognizes the vision that we have for TAF Academy and her son is bringing it to life.

Speaking of having a vision for education, did you hear President Obama's speech Tuesday night? In that speech, the President gave us all a call to action: "The day of reckoning has arrived, and the time to change our future is here." At several points, he spoke clearly about how the economic recession has led to a crisis in education.

Here in our own state, lawmakers are grappling with tough decisions about cutting programs, many of which disproportionately affect the kids we serve - students of color in already underserved communities. Listen to this story that aired on KUOW about the impact of losing Career Counselors at local Seattle high schools.

TAF knows services like these are vital to guarantee equal access to higher education for students of color. That's why we underwrite the salary of a Career Counselor at TAF Academy @ Federal Way. She meets with each class on a weekly basis and is on campus daily to meet with students one on one. We can already see the impact of her work: our students tell us they see a clear path to college and the steps they need to take to get there.

Every day we hear countless arguments about how to fix the public education system. There is no magic bullet, but we must move forward with a vision of providing our children with the best education. That means we will have to look at new models and new ideas (like at TAF Academy, for example) and be open to throwing a lot of hard work behind these plans for change. Most of all, we must be unwavering in our belief that all students are capable learners.

Thanks for listening!
