Dear TAF,
I would like to share with you how TAF is doing in this time of economic change, which has affected us all both personally and professionally.

For over 12 years now, our work as a non-profit organization has been fully supported by individual, corporate and foundational gifts. TAF sets an operating budget each September based on what it takes to deliver our programs. This year, our goal was to reach 430 students in two programs: 300 K-8th grade students at 11 TechStart sites around the city and 130 students at TAF Academy in Federal Way.

Just as you are we are looking carefully at what is really needed to be effective and efficient in our work. Every decision has always been, and will continue to be, based on a simple directive: "What is best for the students we serve?"

I stand by my words: The education of our children cannot be put on hold, even in the most difficult of financial times.

In response to these times, we will not renew our lease at our original home on Edmunds Street. We're not going far, though. In June, the operations and development teams and I will join the rest of our staff in the TAF Genesee Learning Space just three blocks north. It's going to be tight for a while, but it will be worth it.

TAF on Facebook

I
will always have fond memories of that day in October 1996 when I walked into the Edmunds space with co-founder Jill Hull Dziko and our only staff member, Yvette Fields. We had to be careful to step over holes in the floor to avoid falling straight into the basement. The place was an empty pit, but we saw the possibilities.

To three of my four children - known as the "littles" - this was an extension of home. They slept in popup tents in my office and took their early steps here with Aunt Sherry (now TAF Deputy Director Sherry Williams) cheering them on. This was where ideas were hatched, debated, thrown away or implemented. This was and is my other home.

I generally accept change and move on, but change is not going to come easy this time. I am coping by keeping my eyes on the prize: providing the best educational opportunities for our students.

While no one can say whether we are on the uphill or downhill of these current economic times, here at TAF we remain committed to moving forward.  That is our mission. We are grateful for your support and know that hope, hard work and love for children are the keys to our success.

Thanks for listening,
