Dear TAF,

Yahoooo!... OMG! Did we think of everything?... Will there be any surprises?...  Whew! I'm going to pass out right now... Unbelievable!

That is the emotional roller coaster I was on Monday morning when our first cohort of TAF Academy students arrived for their first day of school. All of a sudden, three years of research, designing, scrapping, starting over, training, interviewing, traveling and a ton of reading all paid off.

I'm happy to say that TAF Academy @ Federal Way
is officially open!!!!

I thought I'd take you through the day from my own experience. You can also look at the pictures online.

While the teachers were putting final touches on their classrooms, most of the TAF staff was on hand at the campus entrance to greet students and hand them their final class schedule. Some parents were a bit anxious, but for the most part they were cool.

Shortly after everyone got settled in their homeroom classes it was time for the all school assembly. I know that at 130 students, the school isn't that big, but saying "all school" sounds really cool to me right now!

At the assembly students were treated to a very creative skit performed by the faculty and staff that covered the dress code and cell phone and iPod usage in school. They were also treated to a video (featuring the TAF Academy and TAF staff) with the Mission: Impossible theme song to give each class their first school culture assignment:
  • 6th grade will design the school sweatshirts and mascot
  • 7th grade will design the a campus friendly map
  • 9th grade will lead the school in developing the school culture and publish the results in a book

Presenting the assignment as a video is just one example of how TAF Academy will use technology in the classroom. Principal Laura Davis-Brown let the students know that they are responsible for establishing the culture of their school and they will be held accountable to whatever they come up with.

After the assembly I visited each classroom twice and was pleased to see all kids participating and getting to know each other. There were some very creative ice breaker exercises going on, so I suspect by the end of this week students will be very familiar with one another. I liked that each class did a different type of icebreaker and kids seemed to be willing to let down their guard and really share who they are. This is a great start to creating a school culture where students look out for each other and act as a large family.

All the teachers seemed comfortable with just the right amount of nerves. We have two who are brand new to teaching. As a result of professional development provided over the summer, teachers were already using the SmartBoards!

As the morning went on, Principal Brown did her usual thing and started getting ahead of all the little problems that could potentially get in the way of success. When I left, our IT guys were activating student internet access and Denise Moseley, the registrar, was getting last minute school registrations completed.

So there you have it!  I know you want to visit the campus. We're working on how to do that without overwhelming the students and staff, so stay tuned!
Thanks for listening and thank you so much for your support!
