educae Dear TAF, |
| Ok, time for the answer to that question I asked at the end of my last letter. In case you forgot, the question was:
What is the relationship between the number 20,000 and 2020?
If you've been to our website in the last few days, you may have guessed it.
By the year 2020 TAF will radically change the trajectory of 20,000 Washington State public school students of color each year. They will graduate high school on time and college ready for STEM-related fields.
Why do we care so much about getting kids college ready? College has always been important, but there are a few factors in the current state of public education that put our students in a dire situation:
-
By the year 2014, only 23% of the living wage jobs will be attainable with just a high school diploma
-
Our state's high school graduation requirements do not match the state college entrance requirements
-
48% of Washington State students entering community college take remedial classes
We have got to make that situation better. By investing TODAY in public school students (particularly underserved students of color), TAF can ensure that all students get the educational opportunities they deserve so they can lead successful lives and contribute to their community.
We have a vision. We have talented people who are ready to fulfill that vision. I'm sure you know this work won't be easy. Someone at a meeting I attended recently said "vision without resources is an illusion." | |
