Dear TAF,
We have a new President! The campaign that kept us all glued to our computers, radios, newspapers and TVs is finally over. President-elect Obama talked loosely about education reform and as he guides our country through the financial crisis and two wars, I hope his goals for education don't get lost along the way.

We must make sure education stays at the top of the list because our children's futures depend on it. There is a way to do that. Remember that Candidate Obama was always saying, "We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." He is right. If we want change, we need to work together to make things happen.

I know many of you are tired after this long election process and you probably need a little rest and a chance to get back to life as you knew it. But don't rest too long! Regardless of how you cast your vote, our children need all of us to fight for their right to a quality education that will prepare them for higher education and beyond.

I am currently reading a fascinating book: Stuck in the Shallow End: Education, Race, and Computing by Jane Margolis. The author uses research to outline the deep roots of inequities in our public education system.

While the data sometimes makes it seem impossible to change the direction of public education, I am still hopeful that we have a chance to make the system work for all children. When I'm done, I'll post a report on our website and to TAF's new Facebook page.

Did you know that over 89% of our students nationwide are educated in the public education system? In 2007, that was 49,113,000 students! At TAF, we are working very hard to change the trajectory of public school students of color in our state because they are the most underserved group in the system.

I hope you will join us as we work to get 20,000 public school students of color college ready for STEM related fields!

Thanks for listening and thank you so much for your support!
