About the STEM Expo

The STEM Expo is an annual school-wide event which showcases individual and group projects focused on various STEM topics.  Students will be asked to address real world problems using the engineering design cycle or the scientific investigative process. Teams will present their projects to local STEM experts and will demonstrate how their research has authentic applications and connections related to solving larger community issues or needs.

First started at TAF’s pilot school TAF Academy in 2013, the STEM Expo allows students to flex their creativity in solving and presenting challenges and issues that are relevant to them while at the same time allowing family, community members, and industry professionals a close view of the amazing things our students are capable of!

New and Improved

This year’s STEM Expo sponsored by Google will be the largest in TAF history with nearly 700 students showcasing their projects to industry experts and professional volunteers. With TAF Academy expanding to serve an additional 400 students at TAF@Saghalie, we want to ensure each and every student feels supported. For many, the Expo will be a new experience and we are committed to setting everyone up for success.

In the days leading up to our STEM Expo, we’ve added a few additional events to deepen student learning and understanding of the innovation process. By introducing an four “innovation incubation phases,” we are confident our students will have an opportunity to make meaningful discoveries as they explore various STEM disciplines.

We’re happy to introduce the all-new STEM Industry Week which will bring over 50 STEM industry professionals to our school over the course of a week to mentor students and help develop driving research questions for their Expo projects.

Four Phases, One Final Goal

To prepare our TAF@Saghalie students for the STEM Expo, we’ve created four “innovation incubation” phases to help students determine what STEM fields or areas of study interest them most, while providing them support from industry experts, teachers, and volunteers along the way.

Kicking-off with a school-wide assembly led by STEM Expo founder and former TAF STEM Integration Program Manager David Harris and sponsoring company Google and ending with final presentations open to the public – we’re excited to be able to expand our notorious expo to more students and witness new ideas!

01

PHASE ONE
Industry Week

In our first Industry Week, students will have the opportunity to speak with STEM professionals within a career/field of their interest. Conversations with STEM experts will help spur additional interest and provide direction for their Spring STEM Expo project.

02

PHASE TWO
Student Innovation Challenge

Within a short time-frame, students will practice design thinking and address a real-world challenge of their choice by conducting a scientific investigation or using the engineering design cycle. Students will then present their solution to a panel of professionals, receive constructive feedback, compete for additional STEM Expo project funding.

03

PHASE THREE
Student Learning & Management

Students will complete their engineering design or scientific investigation study, and practice presenting their resulting project findings and or prototypes in preparation for the culminating presentations at the STEM Expo.

04

PHASE FOUR
STEM Expo

In the culminating exhibition, our springtime STEM Expo, students will exhibit their projects and demonstrate how their research and project has authentic applications and connections related to solving community issues or needs. These events are open to the public and include a formal award ceremony following “PechaKucha” style presentations.

Volunteer

With more students comes a need for more volunteers. This year, we’re working hard to pull together our community of professionals to help us make our STEM Expo events a success. More importantly, we’re leaning on you to help us support our students – many of which are experiencing the STEM Expo for the first time.

If you are able to volunteer, please sign-up for as many roles as you are comfortable with.

Thank you so much for supporting TAF!
