Sound Credit Union becomes an official TAF partner supporting equitable education for students in underserved communities in Washington State
Seattle, WA (August 12, 2019) – TAF (Technology Access Foundation) is excited to announce an official partnership with Sound Credit Union, enabling more students in underserved communities in Washington State to access equitable STEM education and industry immersion experiences.
In coordination with TAF, Sound Credit Union plans to provide at least two engagement opportunities in the coming year through corporate volunteerism and career connected experiences, allowing students to interact first-hand with industry professionals.
Sound Credit Union has supported TAF as a community partner for almost a year, and during the 2018-2019 school year, provided a financial education workshop to TAF@Saghalie students, which taught students healthy banking habits and financial planning. Company representatives have also volunteered as judges for TAF@Saghalie’s most recent STEM Expo and have donated items to TAF@Saghalie families through the employee-driven campaign, “12 Days of Kindness”.
Next year, as an official TAF Alliance member, the credit union plans to do more. “We have enjoyed this opportunity to work with the students and staff at TAF. We look forward to continuing to build this relationship and help the students to develop banking skills that will help them in making quality financial decisions in their future,” said Jennifer Reed, VP/Public Relations at Sound Credit Union.
Sound Credit Union is known for its strong community involvement. In 2018, they supported 200 local community organizations and 275 of their employees participated in volunteer activities. TAF is excited to work with an organization that shares its commitment to improving access to opportunities and looks forward to a strong partnership of building future leaders.
“We are very excited to have Sound Credit Union join our Alliance Partner Membership Program,” said TAF Corporate Relations Manager, Tyrone Cunningham. Our students will benefit greatly through their continued advocacy and passionate employees giving back in support of our TAF@Saghalie school.”
About TAF
Since 1996 TAF has been a nonprofit leader in changing education and access to educational and career opportunities for students and teachers of color across Washington State. Through four core programs: TAF@Saghalie, School Transformation, Martinez Fellowship, and Teacher’s Institute, TAF address three problems that keep students of color away from STEM education and careers: low expectations, a shortage of role models in STEM and lack of access to quality, STEM-focused education. By partnering with public school districts, TAF creates schools with academic environments that eliminate race-based disparity in academic achievement and promote the highest level of student learning and teacher development.
