Transforming Together

The classroom experience is so much more than learning math and reading skills to pass an exam. It’s engaging with peers, learning skills that will prepare you for life, and gaining the tools to create the future you envision for yourself and your community. A TESTAMENT TO OUR WORK:

YIELD GIVING AWARD

We are proud to have been selected from over 6,353 applications from all 50 states and Puerto Rico, to receive the Yield Giving grant in recognition of our long-standing commitment to making change in our community. This generous $2 million gift affirms that our work, together, is making a noticeable impact. We are leveraging this gift to ensure our reserves are equipped to sustain us through the unknown while also using it as a catalyst to take TAF to the next level.

But we need your help to keep this work going. School budget deficits are threatening the progress we’ve made across our partner districts. Your support will fund new initiatives to serve our community of partners, educators, and scholars. Together, we can transform public education and bring joy to students everywhere.

School Partnerships

PARTNERSHIPS THAT TRANSFORM LEARNING

Transformation is only possible in partnership with schools who are equally committed to evolving public education. That’s why our partnership model is not a one-size-fits-all format.

We take collaboration to heart, working side-by-side with administrators, educators, students, and the community to address challenges facing schools looking to bring equitable, student-centered learning to scholars.

TAF'S TRANSFORMED PARTNER:
FIRST CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL

What would public education look like if our STEMbyTAF model reached students throughout their K-12 journey? With our latest partnership, we’re closer to finding out than ever before.

First Creek Middle School (FCMS) is conveniently located near two of TAF’s current TransformED elementary school partners, Boze and Roosevelt Elementary, in eastern Tacoma. This proximity makes it an ideal location for furthering our impact in the region. Despite initial hesitation, the 6th grade teachers at FCMS quickly began to see the value of the STEMbyTAF model. Learning began at our Summer Institute, an annual conference where TAF coaches work with educators to deep dive into our model and support instructional planning. After building curriculum that centered student voice and choice, teachers partnered with local community organizations like Tacoma Power, the city of Tacoma’s electrical utility, to support student learning. Through these partnerships, students gained practical insights that would help inform their prototypes, which harnessed thermal energy to help their local community.

Having student voices drive their learning has transformed the classroom experience at FCMS and filled the school with excitement and joy as scholars connected the dots between their learning and their community. Each student’s unique passion shone through as they ideated, collaborated, and innovated to bring their projects to life. This fall, the next phase of our partnership will bring 7th grade teachers to Summer Institute to build on the momentum of this year’s class before expanding to the entire school in 2026.

Professional Learning

EVOLVING OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TO
MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR PARTNERS

Dedicated time for educators and administrators to hone their skills and knowledge is critical for schools to transform into equitable, student-centered learning environments. With space to explore new ways to authentically assess students, incorporate equitable learning practices, plan projects, and collaborate with community members, teachers can bring meaningful experiences to the classroom. TAF professional development programs provide a tailored approach to help partner schools address these critical issues and more. We are now offering all educators across the state the opportunity to benefit from our transformative professional development workshops.

LIFTING EDUCATORS OF COLOR:
NETWORK FOR EdWork

As schools are forced to deprioritize learning for educators and leaders due to budget constraints, creating accessible opportunities for professional learning has become paramount. TAF’s Network for EdWork (NWEW) is building a coalition of like-minded organizations to make racial equity training more accessible for partner districts. Aimed at increasing the diversity of the educator workforce, this new approach is providing schools with the resources needed to prioritize professional development for staff.

NWEW’s second-ever Convening brought over 200 participants together to recommit to the work of educational equity. Attendees felt inspired and rejuvenated as they attended breakout sessions to discuss issues BIPOC educators face within the education system and focus on specific ways to imagine, heal, and build. Following the event, the NWEW is engaging with presenters to serve as a valuable resource for attendees as they take their learnings with them to their schools.

TAF’s flagship Martinez Fellowship program, which provides support systems and training for early-career BIPOC educators at no cost, continues to thrive. Centered on removing oppressive structures in education through reflection and student-centered learning models, the program has grown to see Fellows impact over 33,000 students across WA state. Meanwhile, our Ally Engagement and Education EnCounter programs, focused on leadership training to sustain and empower BIPOC educators and aspiring leaders, continue to shift the lens through which we look at professional learning. As educators and leaders engage in this work, more students are feeling heard, seen, and represented in classrooms and schools we partner with.

Thank !

This past year, local STEM industry volunteers provided over 85 hours of diverse STEM career-connected learning experiences in game development, public health, marine science, and much more through our Teacher-Scientist Partnership program. Thank you to our volunteers, who provide meaningful experiences for students to connect their learning to real-world examples.
